Thought I'd be a fan of the holes on top of the uke until I actually played a Riptide for a bit, Gary. Now, you can keep them.
If the uke is tilted towards you, which odds are that it will be, the sound is going not so much to your ears but to your chest and into your clothing. Along that line, too, loose clothing can and does cover the hole(s) lowering volume.
Don't think I've ever seen Kitten on the Keys playing a uke with top holes, either. Must be a reason...
