Roberto Moniz, a contemporary Madeiran musician and blogger, has posted this photograph of Madeiran musicians from 1890. That's 11 years after the Ravenscrag arrived in Hawaii. Wonder if news of the machete/ukulele's popularity had reached these guys. If so, I bet a couple of them regret not getting on the ship. Also wonder if any of them eventually ended up in Hawaii ... Such a stunning photo. I would love to know who they are (I'm fairly sure the guy on the left is Patsy Monteleone's great-grandad).
The chap in the center (with machete on thigh) is Agostinho Martins. http://www.recursosonline.org/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=1018&Itemid=19 (links to pdf)
More here, including the original photo. http://www.recursosonline.org/index.php?option=com_docman&task=search_result&Itemid=19 search on agostinho martins
Awesome photo - thanks for posting!
Did you happen to notice that when you go to the search page (mentioned in Gary's comment above) it is the website of "Gabinete Coordenador de Educação Artística". Yes, that's right - look at the very bottom of the page - "© 2009 GCEA". Nice coincidence!
Also, not trying to nit-pick but 1890 is actually 11 years after the Ravenscrag arrived in Hawaii - so maybe they were regretting not making the trip by that time!
TW, I will sheepishly correct my chronological error.
